## Rishikesh at a glance

Rishikesh is a different India from Goa or Kerala: a Himalayan-foothill town of 70,499 people (Wikidata: population, 2011) on the Ganges where the year brings **219 sunshine days and 40 % average cloud** (Copernicus ERA5: 2025 figures) — the brightest, clearest numbers in this tranche — and where the town's character is set by two things almost nowhere else combines: it is legally **dry**, and it is effectively vegetarian.

The mapped data tells that story bluntly. **2 nightlife venues** (OpenStreetMap: within 15 km), a 1.0 % share of all mapped eating and drinking places (OpenStreetMap: of cafés, restaurants and bars) — the lowest in the entire catalogue by a distance. Against that, 6 yoga studios (OpenStreetMap: within 15 km) and 13 mapped trails (OpenStreetMap: within 30 km) in the foothills behind the town.

The costs are real. **Zero coworking spaces** (OpenStreetMap: within 15 km), the nearest airport is 156 km away (OurAirports: nearest major airport) — the longest transfer in the catalogue — and India grants **no visa-free entry** to any of our five reference passports, requiring an e-Tourist visa plus an e-Arrival Card filed 72 hours before landing since 1 April 2026 (Government sources: checked 2026-07-29). The seasonal swing is the sharpest here too: 29.4 °C in summer against 15.5 °C in winter (Copernicus ERA5: 2025 seasonal averages).

It suits you if a practice — yoga, meditation, writing, training — is the reason you are travelling and the town's asceticism is a feature. It suits you less if you want a drink, a steak, a coworking desk or a short taxi to the airport.

## Visa & entry (India)

No visa-free entry and no nomad visa: every EU/US visitor needs at least an e-Tourist visa, plus — since 1 April 2026 — an e-Arrival Card filed 72 hours before landing. The 1- and 5-year e-visas sound generous but cap you at 90 days per visit and 180 days a year.

### How long you can stay

- No nationality relevant here enters visa-free. The **e-Tourist visa** comes in three sizes for most passports: **30 days** (double entry, non-extendable, US$10–25 depending on season), **1 year** (US$40) and **5 years** (US$80), both multiple entry.
- The fine print does the limiting: each visit is capped at **90 continuous days** — US, UK, Canadian and Japanese nationals get **180** — and your total on e-Tourist visas may not exceed **180 days per calendar year**.
- Apply only at **indianvisaonline.gov.in**; the copycat-site problem is worse for India than almost anywhere.
- ⚠️ **New since 1 April 2026:** every foreign national must file a free **e-Arrival Card** online within 72 hours before landing and show the QR code at immigration. Paper arrival cards are abolished; the grace period ended 31 March 2026.

### Working remotely here

- India has **no digital-nomad visa** and none announced. The employment visa requires an Indian employer; the business visa covers meetings and trade, not living here on a foreign salary.
- Working online while on a tourist e-visa is the unspoken norm among nomads in Goa, Bangalore and the Himalayan hill towns — a **grey area** the rules simply do not address. Nothing permits it; enforcement against laptop workers is essentially unheard of, but you are betting on inattention, not on law.
- The 180-days-per-year ceiling is the real constraint: India can be a half-year base at most on tourist status, with a visa run to Sri Lanka, Nepal or Thailand between visits.

## Living in Rishikesh

### Where to stay

**Tapovan**, above Lakshman Jhula on the west bank, is where most foreign long-stayers land: yoga schools, cafés, guesthouses, and the best balance of quiet and services. **Lakshman Jhula** itself is more crowded and more convenient. **Swarg Ashram** on the east bank is the traditional pilgrimage side — ashrams, temples, no alcohol anywhere near it, and a stricter atmosphere. **Ram Jhula** sits between the two. **Rishikesh town** proper, several kilometres south, is the unromantic version with markets, the railway station and real prices. Upstream toward Shivpuri you trade everything for river and forest.

### Finding a place

Guesthouses and ashrams negotiate monthly rates directly, and outside the March–May and September–November peaks they negotiate hard. Yoga schools often bundle accommodation with training, which is the cheapest route if the course is the point. Facebook groups cover the small long-term market. Check heating and hot water with unusual care — winter nights are genuinely cold, buildings are rarely heated, and a 15.5 °C average (Copernicus ERA5: Dec-Feb, 2025) indoors and out is a different proposition than the number suggests. Ask about monkeys and window latches; this is not a joke.

### Working from here

There is no coworking space (OpenStreetMap: within 15 km). 72 cafés are mapped (OpenStreetMap: within 15 km), and the Tapovan café strip has adapted to laptops as well as anywhere in India — long tables, power, tolerant owners and Ganges views. No median internet speed has been measured here; fibre exists in Tapovan and is patchy elsewhere, so test the specific guesthouse and keep a mobile-data backup. A 3.5-hour European overlap (Copernicus ERA5: 09:00-17:00 against CET) and none with the US (Copernicus ERA5: against US East) make an early-morning-practice, mid-day-work, evening-Europe rhythm the natural shape — which happens to be exactly the schedule the town already runs on.

### Getting around

The town is walkable in sections and connected by two pedestrian suspension bridges — Lakshman Jhula and Ram Jhula — that motorbikes use anyway. Autorickshaws and shared vehicles cover the rest for very little. Scooter rental opens up the upstream valley. The 156 km to Dehradun's airport (OurAirports: nearest major airport) is the structural inconvenience: it is a three-to-four-hour road transfer, and the overnight train or bus from Delhi is often the saner choice. Haridwar's railway station, 25 km south, is the practical rail hub.

### Money

India's price level of 22.7 against the US at 100 (World Bank: price level of household consumption) applies, and Rishikesh sits below even that — a guesthouse month, daily thalis and a yoga course together cost less than rent alone in most of the catalogue. UPI dominates; cash still matters in the markets and for autos. Cards work in the tourist-facing cafés and ashram offices and nowhere else. There is no drinking budget, which does more for the monthly total than people expect.

### Staying safe

India's homicide rate is 2.72 per 100,000 (UNODC: 2023) and Rishikesh is a pilgrimage town with a correspondingly low crime profile. The genuine hazards are physical and environmental. **The Ganges kills people every year** — the current is fast, cold and stronger than it looks, and swimming outside designated shallow areas is a bad idea regardless of ability. Monkeys are aggressive around food and will enter rooms. Traffic on the Haridwar road is the ordinary Indian risk. The monsoon brings landslides and road closures in the hills above. Tap water is not drinkable (Nomadbase country research: country-level tier). Medical provision is thin at 25 facilities and just 4 mapped pharmacies (OpenStreetMap: within 15 km); Dehradun handles anything serious. Finally, the spiritual-tourism economy attracts a share of unqualified teachers and outright charlatans — check certifications and reputations before paying for a long course.

### Seasons

23.7 °C on the year (Copernicus ERA5: 2025 annual average) hides the widest seasonal swing in this tranche: 29.4 °C in June–August against 15.5 °C in December–February (Copernicus ERA5: 2025 seasonal averages), which is why only 2 months land in the mild band (Nomadbase comfort index: from 2025 data). **February to April** and **September to November** are the two good windows — clear, warm days and the full yoga season. **May and June** are punishing before the rains. The **monsoon from July to September** brings most of the 146 rain days (Copernicus ERA5: full-year count, 2025), closes rafting and makes the hill roads unreliable. **Winter** is bright, sharp and cold indoors — 219 sunshine days a year (Copernicus ERA5: full-year count, 2025) mostly land outside the monsoon.

### Meeting people

The community is unusually easy to enter and unusually structured: yoga teacher trainings run in month-long cohorts, and a course is the single fastest way to arrive with thirty people you know. Beyond that, ashram programmes, meditation retreats and the same Tapovan cafés every morning. The population is heavily transient and heavily purposeful — most people are here to do something specific for a fixed period, which makes conversation easy and long friendships less likely. There is no bar culture to fall back on: with 2 nightlife venues (OpenStreetMap: within 15 km), social life happens over chai, breakfast and the sunset aarti at Parmarth Niketan.

### Staying active

This is the town's actual industry. 6 yoga studios are mapped (OpenStreetMap: within 15 km) against dozens of unmapped schools and ashrams offering everything from drop-in classes to 200- and 500-hour certifications. 16 gyms (OpenStreetMap: within 15 km) cover conventional training. Outdoors, 13 trails (OpenStreetMap: within 30 km) and 2 protected areas (OpenStreetMap: within 30 km) run into the foothills — the Neer Garh waterfall walk and the Kunjapuri sunrise hike are the standards. White-water rafting on the Ganges is the other local sport, running roughly September to June. Beyond that the Himalaya proper begins: this is the trailhead town for the Char Dham and for serious trekking further north.

### Time off

The Ganga aarti at sunset — Parmarth Niketan for the organised version, Triveni Ghat for the local one — is the fixed point of the week. Beyond it: the Beatles Ashram's derelict graffiti-covered domes, the Neer Garh waterfall, the temples at Kunjapuri and Neelkanth, and simply sitting on the ghats. 119 restaurants are mapped (OpenStreetMap: within 15 km) with 11 vegetarian and 7 vegan formally tagged (OpenStreetMap: within 15 km) — an undercount, since the entire town is effectively meat-free and alcohol-free by law. Haridwar's much larger aarti is an hour south. Further out, Dehradun and Mussoorie give you a city and a hill station respectively, and the road north opens into the Garhwal Himalaya.
